There was supposed to be, basically, a multiflag CTF type mode with loot (gold!) instead of flags. These were going to be some hero props for the mode, but it wasn't working well so it got pushed back indefinitely. The chest ended up being used for ammo crates with the coins taken out though. I decided to go with simple coin meshes with diffuse and heightmap textures and bake those straight to the game mesh instead of placing hundreds of high poly coins.
